Must-Know Percussion Terms
Learning to play percussion instruments, like the tuneable timpani, involves learning the jargon as well, so here are some basic percussion terms that you will encounter:
- -Groove – also known as beat, a drum groove is the rhythmic pattern of the music played;
- -Throne – the term is used for the seat occupied by the drum player;
- -Tempo – the speed of the play. Many drummers practice that with the help of a small ricking device called a metronome;
- -Grip – the way the drummer holds the drumstick. There are several styles, from holding the stick like a fork (called the American grip), the French grip, the Germanium grip to the matched grip, the traditional grip and many other styles;
- -Rudiments – these are drum patterns that can be used as drills or can be combined to compose drum solos. There are around 40 rudiments that drummers commonly use;
- -A practice pad – this is an imitation drum that gives a realistic feel to the player, but makes no sound. It is used by drummers for practicing in environments where they are not supposed to make noise;
- -Drum fill – the part of the song when the other instruments stop and the drummer gets the opportunity to play solo.
